The Bodhisatta was once a teacher. A father had four daughters and they had four suitors, one handsome, one old, one virtuous, and one from a noble family. The father could not decide which man to give his daughters to, so he asked the Bodhisatta. The Bodhisatta answered that all four qualities were good, but virtue is the best measure of a man. So the father gave his daughters to the virtuous man.
In the Lifetime of the Buddha
A father had four daughters and they had four suitors, one handsome, one old, one virtuous, and one from a noble family. The father could not decide which man to give his daughters to, so he asked the Buddha. To answer the question, the Buddha told this story from one of the father’s earlier births when he faced the exact same situation.
